If your spell checker for Windows Mail, is not working, try the following, for a possible fix.
Click on Tools at the top of Windows Mail. then options, then spelling. Choose a language other than english, press apply. Next choose English again and press apply, then return to your create mail message. type a message with typos in it and try spell check.. Return To The How To Do It Page
